Robot Gets Stuck in Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, Upgraded Brothers Continue the Work

In October last year, Quincy, a Japanese made disaster relief robot got stranded in Fukushima nuclear power plant’s No. 2 reactor building. While on it’s way back from taking photos and measuring radiation levels, all communication with the robot was suddenly cut off. After attempts to restart the robot, it was discovered that it’s cable had snapped. Quincy has since been abandoned inside the reactor.

Radioactive Contamination Cleaned Up with Blue Goo

The task of cleaning up the nuclear contamination in affected parts of Fukushima is a huge one. Hazmat crews have been working hard to clean up the area hit my the earthquake and tsunami which caused the state of emergency at the nuclear power plants. The traditional way of cleaning up such a mess is pretty low tech; soap, water and brushes. Robots Recruited to Help Battle Radiation Problem

Robots have joined in the fight to contain the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. As the brave employees battle to prevent a meltdown, robots have arrived to monitor the radiation levels and help clean up.

First on the scene was MoniRobo (Monitor Robot), a 52 inch tall, 1300 pound bot designed specifically for operating at lethal levels of radiation. It was developed by the Japanese Nuclear Safety Technology Center after the 1999 nuclear accident in Tokaimura which resulted in 2 deaths .

As you already know (unless you’ve been off planet for a few weeks), following a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake and incredibly destructive tsunami, one of Japan’s major nuclear plants has been the center of attention in the media. After the plant’s cooling systems were knocked out by the earthquake and tsunami we saw a state of emergency at the plant and the surrounding area.
