Fujitsu Ten has just released an app that takes video from an iPhone camera, displays it on the screen of a car navigation system and superimposes icons on the video. The augmented reality application can provide useful information about the surroundings to help with giving directions.
The “Driview” application which is available for free download, works with Fujitsu Ten’s “Eclipse” brand of car navigation systems ( ‘AVN-ZX02i’ or ‘AVN-Z02i’ ). The iPhone is connected to the navigation system using a separately sold cable.

Honda motors recently started testing the world’s first technology to prevent traffic congestion. This system was developed after realizing that the acceleration and deceleration of one vehicle affects the traffic patterns of the vehicles trailing behind. The system detects a vehicle’s potential to cause traffic congestion by analyzing a car’s driving pattern. The driver is then given advice on best times to accelerate or apply braking via an on board color-coded display, resulting in smoother driving.

Fumihiro Takeda spent over ten years and 20 million yen modifying a Nissan Infiniti Q45 into what he calls the “Mayumi Special”. In Takeda own words “To put it simply, this is an awesome car. I want to make cars that interest even people who aren’t usually interested, including children. I want to create cars that make people say wow, cars that are fun to look at, that are not just pretty cool, but awesome.”

Minds were blown at Tokyo Motor Show 2011 with Toyota’s unveiling of their concept car for the “not-too-distant future”, the Fun Vii (Vehicle, Interactive, Internet). This is a car whose entire surface; both interior and exterior is a full color display.
